THIRTY-EIGHT

“This is it?” I ask from the passenger seat of Jax's car. I am surprised to see such a nice house, and in a very well-kept neighborhood. Definitely too rich for me to live in. For being a drug addict, I never expected Daniel to be here. I thought I’d see a run-down apartment complex, dingy basement condo, or even a manufactured home in desperate need of repair in the middle of the desert. Not this. Not something that puts my house to shame.

“Guess he’s still suckling on Daddy's teat,” Jax says, peering over his sunglasses at the house. He's right, of course. Being a successful podiatrist comes with a lot of perks. Perks that Daniel clearly benefits from.

Jax offered to drive me to the address that he found online. He said it was the least he could do for getting me into the predicament of showing up late to work, along with still feeling like my guts were on fire. Luckily, the headache has subsided, but I still feel queasy and grimy, like a film of sweat is covering my body. I accepted his ride, but mostly because I was afraid that I’d chicken out if I got behind the wheel myself.

This way, at least I can sit outside Daniel's house and tell myself that I will go in. Doing it, however, is another story. And I think Jax can sense my hesitation as I stare at the door that lies just beyond the concrete path lined with bushes. I bite my lip, but I don't reach for the handle to open the car door.

“I guess,” I say, trying to figure out my next move. I know what I want to do, and I know what I'm going to do. I sink into my chair and turn my head forward. “Come on, we should go.”

Jax cocks his head and takes a long look at me over his sunglasses. “Is that really what you want to do? After everything that's happened, you're just going to let it be that way?”

I throw my hands in the air. “What am I supposed to do? What is confronting Daniel going to do about it?”

“A lot more than doing nothing,” Jax says. “Because if you do nothing, you get nothing. Do you understand that?”

I do understand that, and that's the problem. I know I don't have it in me to do anything about it. “I'm not like you, Jax. I can't just walk up to that door like I own it. And even if I do, I know I’ll back off.”

Jax looks to the door, then back to me. “Come on, let's go.” He gets out of the car and walks around to my side. He opens the door and motions for me to get out. I hesitate, but he shakes his head. “If you don't want to deal with confrontation, then staying here is going to do just the opposite. Either you confront him, or you confront me.”

I try to figure out if he's serious, but there's not a hint of a smile on his face.
